WasteOlas featured in the ETH Zurich’s Carbon Dioxide Removal Booster white paper: current status and outlook for the Swiss CDR ecosystem
The white paper “Evolving the Swiss CDR Ecosystem: Understanding Today’s Challenges to Shape Tomorrow’s Solutions,” published by the Carbon Dioxide Removal Booster under the leadership of ETH Zurich’s Sus.lab, provides a detailed overview of the Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) sector in Switzerland. WasteOlas is mentioned in the report among the stakeholders who contributed to the survey and the collective discussion on the future of the sector.
What is the CDR?
Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) refers to the range of technologies and solutions designed to permanently remove CO₂ from the atmosphere. These methods include, for example, direct air capture of CO₂, geological sequestration, carbon utilization in materials or products, and the use of biological processes such as afforestation or bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS).
The development of CDR solutions is now recognized as a key driver for achieving climate goals and offsetting hard-to-avoid residual emissions.
A Map of the Swiss CDR Ecosystem
The white paper is based on a survey of industry stakeholders, including WasteOlas, aimed at mapping existing initiatives and identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the ecosystem. It highlights the diversity of solutions developed in Switzerland, ranging from direct CO₂ capture from the air to the use of carbon in innovative products or materials.
The main challenges identified
Among the main challenges identified, the report highlights:
- The need to strengthen collaboration among public, private, and academic stakeholders to accelerate the development and scaling up of CDR technologies;
- The importance of clarifying the regulatory framework and funding mechanisms to support innovation;
- The need to raise greater awareness among policymakers and the general public about the challenges and opportunities associated with CO₂ utilization.
The recommendations in the white paper
The white paper proposes several courses of action to structure and revitalize the Swiss CDR ecosystem :
- Encourage the creation of platforms for exchange and experience sharing between the various stakeholders;
- Develop measurement and certification standards to ensure the credibility of solutions;
- Encourage investment in research and development, as well as pilot projects.
WasteOlas’ commitment
The participation of WasteOlas in this survey and in the reflection led by the CDR Booster is part of a continuous process of collaboration and promotion of CO 2 recovery technologies. By contributing to this type of initiative, WasteOlas affirms its involvement in the Swiss ecosystem and its commitment to supporting the emergence of concrete solutions for the transition towards a low-carbon economy.
